Phone not charging: causes and what to do

A phone that won't charge isn't always an expensive fault. Often it's the cable, the charger or lint inside the port. Start with the simple checks and only move on to a repair if you need to.

1. Try another cable and charger

Cables wear out, especially near the ends. Try a cable and charger you know work, in a different socket.

If the phone charges with another cable, you've solved it without a repair.

2. Check the charging port

Pocket lint builds up inside the port and stops the cable from seating properly. If the plug feels loose or only charges at a certain angle, this is the most likely cause.

Don't put metal objects into the port. You can short the contacts. We clean ports safely in store, usually in a few minutes.

3. Restart and update

Occasionally software stops charging. Restart the phone and install the latest update if you can.

4. When it's the battery

If the phone charges but the percentage drops very fast, it shuts down suddenly or the case is bulging, the battery is worn. A swollen battery is dangerous: stop charging the device and bring it in for a check.

5. When it needs a repair

If none of the above helped, it's most likely a faulty charging port, battery or, less often, the charging circuit on the board. We diagnose it and give you the price before we start.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a charging port replacement cost?

It depends on the model. Find your device on the repair page to see the price, or ask Fixie.

Can I charge wirelessly if the port is broken?

If your phone supports wireless charging, yes, as a temporary fix. You still need the port for data transfer and some accessories.

Will I lose my data?

A charging port or battery repair doesn't erase your data. It's always wise to have a backup before any repair.
